Ah, the media.

I remember the good old days when people were tried and hanged for spreading propaganda against their government.

On Tuesday I was at my friends' apartment and they were watching the pilot episode of "V", a new 13-episode series about the invasion of aliens who seem incredibly peaceful but are secretly here to abduct half of our population and use us for energy.

The aliens are portrayed as being incredibly appealing, convincing the masses to blindly follow them, and a lot of people in the show immediately become very passionate about supporting the aliens even though they really don't understand what's at stake.

The moment that really made me laugh: In an interview with a reporter, the alien leader says that in return for the the humans' hospitality, they will use their technological advances to establish health facilities that will cure any disease and be free for everyone.

The reporter replies, "Oh you mean like universal healthcare?"

Another great line:
"The aliens are using the most powerful weapon that exists: devotion."
They made a big deal about that line and I had to laugh. Not that I really care, since I'm still undecided about the health care debate, but could they be any less subtle? Seriously?

  1. Hi, Stephen...Uncle Bob here. I enjoy reading your blog. You are just one wild-and-crazy guy, living it up in LA.

I have some questions. What happened to your eye? Did some gang-banger (or homeless person) punch you out? I have friends in the LA area if you need any 'protection.'

In regards to 'V,' I missed the preview, but have read a bit about the show. The concept they are using is not a new one...it's happened before. (As they say, "there are no longer any new ideas in the world, just a re-hash of the old ones.") To wit, conquering civilzation: Catholics and the Crusades, Mormons and the Mountain Meadows Massacre, US troops and the My Lai Massacre, the Greek Army and the Tripolitsa Massacre, etc.

In regards to Universal Health Care, we have been dragging our feet on this issue w-a-y to long. Let's get on with it. Too bad that the big and bloated health insurance companies (aka, Blue Floss) and the drug manufactures are doing their best to block it, as are the conservative right-wingers. It's the health care needs of the US population that are at stake...not more $$ to line the pockets of the Fat Cats.

You should drop by and see us sometime...after all, you are only about 80 miles from our place in the wilds of Warner Springs.

    Good luck to you, dude.
